Hyderabad: Police has sought help of the ministry of external affairs (MEA) to bring back 16-year-old Rukhsarunissa alias Rukhsar, who was married off to a 64-year-old Omani sheikh four months ago. However sheikh is trying his best to prove that his wife is an adult.
The matter had come to light after Sayeedunnisa, Rukhsar’s mother lodged an FIR at Falaknuma police station in August. Sikander and Ghousia, (Rukhsar’s paternal aunt) had a hand in arranging the marriage. Both were arrested and sent to prison.
Meanwhile Falaknuma police has initiated the process of bringing back Rukhsar with the help of MEA. TOI has quoted ACP, Falaknuma, Md Tajuddin Ahmed as saying “We have sent the evidence to the Indian diplomatic mission in Oman to prove Rukhsar is a minor. We are trying to bring her back home.”
Apart from this police has also begun crackdown against brokers and qazis who facilitate sham marriages. In this connection Hyderabad city police have arrested five Omani and three Qatar nationals, along with three Qazis, including a chief Qazi of Mumbai.
