Shashi Tharoor apologizes for his derogatory remark on Miss World

New Delhi: Congress MP Shashi Tharoor remarkable comment on new Miss World Manushi Chillar’s surname referring to Centre’s demonetization move has invited strong criticism from Haryana’s two senior Ministers.
Haryana Women and Child Development Minister Kavita Jain reacting to Tharoor’s tweet said “indulged in callous and reckless wordplay on new Miss World Manushi Chhillar” demanding the Minister to apologize for his comment since the Haryana born newly elected Miss World has brought pride to the nation after 17 long years.
In a statement, Jain said, “Tharoor has only exposed his own debased thinking by questioning the self-respect of our daughters, the pride of the country, and the brave community ‘Chhillar’ “.
“It is tragic that leaders of the Congress party which is headed by a woman do not respect women. Such low thinking is responsible for the Congress losing its base in the country,” she added.
Haryana Finance Minister Capt Abhimanyu has also criticized Tharoor’s comment saying, “A shameless comment deserves to be withdrawn and Shashi must apologise for this…can’t believe…he can go so low…(sic)”

National Commission for Women (NCW) Chief Rekha on Monday said, “I was thinking to summon him but he apologised but his apologies aren’t genuine. It seems he’s telling people to chill after apologising. I would suggest him he must apologise properly to the nation.”
As it seems, Shashi Tharoor has reportedly apologized for his nasty remark saying it was a “light-hearted” comment and had also praised the new miss universe.
However, it is not clear if his apology comes after his comment was taken as offence and the NCW on Sunday decided to summon Tharoor over his “derogatory” remark.
The NCW chief said, “He hasn’t hit below the belt only the girl but also the nation because she got fame & name to the nation. Summon doesn’t mean we want to go to police or book him, we just want him to realize what he said was wrong.”
She added, Apparently punning on the word ‘chillar’, which in Hindi means “loose change”, Congress leader Shashi Tharoor on Sunday tweeted, “What a mistake to demonetize our currency! BJP should have realized that Indian cash dominates the globe: look, even our Chhillar has become Miss World!”

Now not just the Ministers and rights commission’s chief took Tharoor’s comment as a derogatory remark, but many twitter handlers got furious over his criticism.
A medical student from Haryana accusing Tharoor of his derogatory comment asked on twitter whether he would call his daughter “chillar”.
To that the NCW tweeted “…he must apologise immediately”

Reacting to the furious tweets he received for his comment, Tharoor reportedly apologized stating no offence was meant to the “bright young girl”.
He tweeted, “Guess the pun IS the lowest form of humour, & the bilingual pun lower still! Apologies to the many who seem to have been righteously offended by a light-hearted tweet today. Certainly no offence was meant to a bright young girl whose answer I’ve separately praised. Please: Chill!”
