Sharjah Material Reclamation Facility to Open by September

Sharjah, July 10: The Sharjah-based environmental company, Bee’ah, is set to launch by September a material reclamation facility (MRF) in the Saja’a industrial area for recycling of paper, plastic, glass and metals, said a representative on Wednesday.

At present, Sharjah does not have any recycling facility and the waste generated is being put into landfills.

Sharjah currently generates approximately 1,000,000 tonnes of waste each year, said James Hartnell, marketing director, Bee’ah.

The remaining waste will be left in the landfills, as research and future methods of processing are being addressed, he added.

The new facility falls under a three-pronged programme, which will first handle Sharjah’s garbage either through the new MRF or through Tandeef, said Jeremy Byatt, environmental
director, Bee’ah.

Tandeef is a street beautification project, which monitors waste bins electronically, and hosts a fleet of road sweeper trucks and outdoor vacuum litter collectors.

“Now that we have the infrastructure we can enable the people of Sharjah to recycle and manage their waste in a responsible way,” said Byatt.
The second programme, involving public awareness campaign to educate school children and university students, will take place after Eid, as the academic session has been postponed until
after Ramadan.

“The campaign will also include an advertising campaign on television and radio, in collaboration with the government of Sharjah, and all the
appropriate media industries,” said Hartnell.

The third programme includes legislation and registration, which will be handled by the Government
of Sharjah.

“There’s a smell in Sharjah, just like anywhere else. The difference here is we’re doing something about it,” said Byatt.
