Sharjah, August 27: Highly-flammable fuel poured out onto a Sharjah street after an accident caused a tanker to turn on its side. Police managed to avert disaster by closing the road for over five hours until 10am on Wednesday morning while rescue teams cleared the area.
Sharjah Police Operations room was notified about the accident at around 4.40 am when the tanker turned on its side and diesel started leaking.
Lieutenant Colonel Ahmed bin Dawrish, who personally supervised the accident site, said that the accident occurred at Al Ta’awon Road while the driver was heading towards Al Ta’awon Square.
“Such accidents could lead to disasters, killing many people, if not contained immediately,” he said.
“The tanker was loaded with inflammable contents and, if no quick intervention was done, a catastrophe could have occurred as the truck was moving at one of the inner roads of the emirates heavily used by the motorists.”
Lt Colonel bin Darwish explained: “Anjad Patrols, Civil Defence and rescue unit immediately rushed to the accident site.
“The rescue unit took the driver out of the tanker; first aid was offered to him at the accident site before being taken to Al Kuwait hospital. Anjad Patrols immediately closed the road to ensure they get rid of the diesel that had started leaking from the tanker.”
