Johannesburg: Defending champions Sevilla destroyed Liverpool long lasting hope of ending their 11-year European drought after defeating them 3-1 in the Europa Cup final at the St. Jakob-Park in Basel on Wednesday night.
Liverpool dominated the early stages of the game and went ahead through an excellent goal by England striker Daniel Sturridge in the 35th minute but Jurgen Klopp’s side failed to capitalise and went to pieces in the second half, Sport24 reported.
Sevilla’s Kevin Gameiro scored the equalizer in less than a minute after the start of the second half and opened the floodgates.
Sevilla’s right-back Coke scored a brace in a gap of six minutes to give Unai Emery’s men a 3-1 lead by the 70th minute.
Earlier, Klopp’s side had stormed into their first continental decider in nine years following their 4-0 aggregate win over Villarreal in the semi-finals of the tournament. (ANI)
