Pristina, January 20: Bringing to light an alarming occurrence, the Kosovo police has reported that in the first two weeks of 2010, seven suicides and 15 attempted suicides were recorded in the country.
Police spokesperson Sabrije Kamberi said that the suicide victims used weapons, rope, drugs and other means. Most of those who managed to take their own life were men, while attempted suicides were more prevalent among women.
Kosovo sociologist Miljaim Nisori told the media in Pristina that the suicide rate in Kosovo is an indicator of the quality of state institutions and the work they are doing, pointing out that one of the key factors driving people to suicide is the difficult economic situation.
The cause of the major rise in the number of suicides and suicide attempts can also be found in the change of the traditional way of life, Nisori believes.
Traditional values are crumbling, while modern values have not been sufficiently established, and as a result we find ourselves in the stage of an existential loss of identity, Nisori assessed.
In 2009, 60 suicides and 255 attempted suicides were reported to the Kosovo police.
