Seven injured in clashes in Karnataka

Belgaum/Haveri (Kar), March 01: At least seven persons, including two police personnel, were injured in separate clashes over Holi celebrations in Belgaum and Haveri districts today, police said.

Heated exchange of words culminated in clashes between members belonging to two communities over Holi celebrations near a place of worship belonging to minority community in Gokak, about 60 km from Belgaum, in which five persons were injured.

In another incident, two groups belonging to different communities clashed with each other in Savanur of Haveri district over beating of drums during Holi and in the ensuing stone-pelting two police officials were injured, police said.

The authorities promulgated prohibitory orders in Gokak and Savanur.

While 49 persons were arrested in connection with the clashes in Gokak, 14 have been taken into custody in Savanur, police said adding security has been strengthened in both the places.
