Baghdad, October 13: Dozens of people have reportedly suffered injuries as a spate of bomb explosions ripped through northern parts of violence-plagued Iraq as well as the capital, Baghdad.
In the first development, a senior police officer was wounded on Monday when a sticky bomb went off in the vicinity of Uqba bin Nafie Square in al-Karada neighborhood, central Baghdad. Four passing civilians were also said to be among those injured in the assault.
Security forces cordoned off the area after the attack and launched an investigation to look into the motive behind the incident. Ambulances and civilian cars, meanwhile, evacuated the victims to a nearby hospital for treatment.
A terrorist attack also occurred on the same day when a civilian and his wife were hurt after four unidentified assailants opened fire on their vehicle in al-Nosour Square, western Baghdad. The gunmen fled the scene after the event, according to eyewitnesses.
Separately, the mayor of Abu Khamees area in the city of Baquba — the capital of Iraq’s restive Diyala province — was wounded along with three of his sons in an improvised explosive device (IED) blast.
Furthermore, a top Iraqi officer survived an assassination attempt when an explosive device targeted his convoy in downtown Baghdad. One of his security guards and three civilians close to the scene of the blast were injured and rushed to a nearby hospital for treatment.
Elsewhere, four children and their mother were injured on Monday when unknown gunmen exploded a bomb near a house in al-Islah al-Ziraie neighborhood, in western Mosul. The blast caused significant damage to the building.
In the most bizarre incident of the day, four Katyusha rockets landed on Basra International Airport at 9:00 p.m. local time (1800 GMT). According to an airport employee, US helicopters kept hovering over the airport after the attack. There were no reports of casualties.
