Srikakulam, April 10: The notorious serial killer, 41-year-old T Ramarao aka Rudrakshapally killer, escaped from the Srikakulam district jail this afternoon by scaling the jail wall.
Ramarao, who had earlier escaped from the Nuzvid jail, was arrested by the Srikakulam police when he was selling stolen gold in Laveru mandal in 2009.
According to jail in-charge Ravulu Sriram, Ramarao, a remand prisoner, cut the bedsheet into pieces and made a long rope. With its help he climbed the 20-ft-tall wall between 1 pm and 1:30 pm.
Speaking to Express, Srikakulam Superintendent of Police Sanjay Kumar Jain said that necessary action would be taken against the lax officials. A meeting will be held tomorrow with the jail officials to review the situation.
Meanwhile, tension prevailed at Rudrakshapalli village in Sattupalli mandal in Khammam district as the news of Ramarao’s jail-break was beamed by television channels. On learning of his escape from Srikakulam jail, villagers of Rudrakshapally looked scared and the police posted a picket in the village today.
Ramarao, belonging to Rudrakshapally, was an accused in the massacre which took place in the village in 2005. He had killed seven persons and injured many others over rivalry with the villagers. After the massacre, he escaped from the village.
The Nuzvid police arrested him and an associate, Yesu, in 2006 and both were sent to jail. After a few days the duo escaped from the Nuzvid sub-jail.
Ramarao then went to Srikakulam, where he started working as daily wage labourer under NREGS. When he had a fight with fellow workers in a theft case, the workers handed him over to the Srikakulam police.
During police interrogation Ramarao spilled the beans on the Rudraskhaplly massacre. He was taken to the Sattupalli court recently in connection with a theft case. The court remanded him and he was lodged in the Srikakulam jail.
With today’s escape Ramarao had so far managed to escape from jails thrice.
