Serena vows to keep chasing Steffi’s record despite French Open defeat

Johannesburg : World number one Serena Williams has vowed to keep chasing down Steffi Graf’s record of 22 Grand Slam titles, despite failing to reach the same once again following her straight sets defeat at the hands of Spain’s Garbine Muguruza in the French Open final last evening.

Williams’ hopes of clinching her first Grand Slam title since last year’s Wimbledon were shattered, as she suffered a 5-7, 4-6 defeat against the fourth-seeded in the summit showdown at the Roland Garros.

It was for the first time that Williams, who was attempting to win her fourth French Open title, lost two successive Grand Slam finals in her career, Sport24 reported.

The 21-time Grand Slam champion said that she had no other option but to keep trying for Graf’s record, adding that she is looking forward to learn from the defeat and give a better performance ahead.

Reflecting on her opponent’s performance, Williams said that Muguruza knows how to perform on a big stage and how to clinch a Grand Slam, insisting that she definitely has a bright future.

With the win, Garbine Muguruza became the first Spanish woman to win here since Arantxa Sanchez Vicario beat Monica Seles in the final in 1998.

Earlier, Serena suffered a shocking semi-final defeat against Italy’s Roberta Vinci at the US Open before losing to Germany’s Angelique Kerber in the Australian Open title match in January. (ANI)
