Separatists attack Yemeni soldiers

Sanaa, May 16: A Yemeni soldier has been killed and four others left wounded after armed separatists opened fire on a military convoy near the southern city of al-Habileen.

The convoy was transporting military officers from the southern port city of Aden to the capital Sana’a when it came under the separatists attack on the outskirts of al-Habileen, German Press Agency DPA quoted an unnamed official as saying on Saturday.

According to local witnesses, one of the gunmen was also killed and another injured, but Southern Movement separatists, believed to have been involved in the ambush, denied the reported account.

Yemen’s defense ministry website has also confirmed the latest military casualties.

People in southern Yemen say they are discriminated against and lack the same economic opportunities as the population of the North. This has led to frequent protests and unrest in the country.
