Sensex up over 400 points; reclaims 21K-level as exit polls predict BJP win

The Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) benchmark Sensex soared to over 400 points in early morning trade on Thursday, and regained the 21,000 level in the wake of several exit polls predicting a Bharatiya Janata Party win in four of the five states that recently held assembly elections.

The states that went to polls were Chhattisgarh, Delhi, Madhya Pradesh, Mizoram and Rajasthan. Polls were held between November 11 and December 4. The counting of votes will take place on December 8.

Exit polls have said that the BJP will achieve huge electoral victories in three of the five states. The Congress is expected to return to power in Mizoram, while Delhi could end up having a hung assembly with the BJP as the single largest party, the exit polls have said.

The Sensex surged to over 439 points, or 2.12 percent, to 21,148.26 in opening trade with all indices trading in green. The rally was led by gain in banking, capital goods, realty, power and auto sector.

The wide based National Stock Exchange (Nifty) also surged over 100 points to trade at 6,287 level.

The rupee was pegged at 61.75 to the dollar in early trade.
