Sensex open 57 points up

Mumbai, August 04: The Bombay Stock Exchange benchmark Sensex opened higher by 57 points today on buying in IT stocks led by Infosys.

The 30-share index rose by 57.28 points, or 0.30 per cent, to 18,172.11 points.

Similarly, the broad-based National Stock Exchange index Nifty gained 13.70 points, or 0.23 per cent, to trade at 5,453.25 points.

Brokers said increased buying by funds and retail investors in heavyweight stocks, particularly technology companies, influenced the trading sentiment.

A weak trend in global markets after weak US data, however, capped the gains in domestic markets, they added.

Among technology stocks, IT major Infosys Technologies shot up by 2.55 per cent to Rs 2,855.55, Tata Consultancy Services by 2.57 per cent to Rs 854.50 and Wipro by 1.88 per cent to Rs 420.25, extending major supported to the Sensex.
