Sensex up 65 pts in opening trade

Mumbai, August 05: The Bombay Stock Exchange benchmark Sensex today opened higher by 65 points on buying by funds and retail investors driven by firming global trends.

The 30-share index rose by 65.87 points, or 0.36 per cent, to 18,283.31 points. The barometer had gained nearly 350 points in the previous three sessions.

The wide-based National Stock Exchange index Nifty also surged by 16.55 points, or 0.20 per cent, to 5,484.40 points.

Stocks of market leader Reliance Industries rose by 0.60 per cent to Rs 1,022 after the company said it would buy 60 per cent stake in a shale-gas venture in the US for USD 392 million.

Among other gainers Infosys Technologies gained 0.95 per cent to Rs 2,895, Tata Consultancy Services gained 1.24 per cent to Rs 880.80, Wipro by 0.94 per cent to Rs 432.90, Sterlite Industries by 0.08 per cent to Rs 178.
