Senior NLC official arrested on graft charges

Chennai, February 26: A senior Neyveli Lignite Corporation (NLC) official was arrested here on graft charges and remanded in judicial custody today.

P Kirubanandan, General Manager with NLC, was arrested last night by the Anti-Corruption Branch of CBI, following a complaint by a contractor that the corporation official had demanded Rs 50,000 for issuing balance payment regarding a contract, the CBI said in a statement.

The agency said the contractor was awarded repair and renovation work at the NLC guest house in Chennai and that the accused allegedly did not release the final payment of Rs 50,000 on completion.

On February 5, the accused finally handed over the cheque to the contractor but with a “threat” to pay Rs 50,000 as bribe or face being blacklisted, the statement said adding that Kirubanandan was caught “red-handed” while accepting the money.
