Senior IPS officer M Punna Rao passes away

Hyderabad, April 20: Senior IPS official of Andhra Pradesh cadre M Punna Rao died in a private hospital while undergoing treatment for a cardiac problem here today.

Punna Rao (58), was serving as Inspector General of Police, Crime Investigation Department. He began his career as a Deputy Superintendent of Police in the Armed Reserve of Andhra Pradesh Police and was inducted into the IPS in 1988. He served in various capacities in different parts of the state and held key positions of Additional Commissioner of Crime and Traffic wings in Hyderabad Police.

Punna Rao hailed from Repalle in Guntur district and is survived by wife, son and daughter. Expressing condolences over the demise of the IPS officer, state Chief Minister N Kiran Kumar Reddy in a message said that Punna Rao was a soft spoken and an efficient officer who had rendered yeoman services to the state. The Chief Minister conveyed his sympathies to the members of the bereaved family.

Andhra Pradesh DGP K Aravinda Rao, Hyderabad Police Commissioner A K Khan were among others visited and paid homage to their departed colleague. Leader of Opposition and TDP President N Chandrababu Naidu also expressed grief over the demise of Punna Rao. “Punna Rao was a able police officer who served the people,” Naidu said.
