Senior IPS officer M Punna Rao dead

Hyderabad, April 20: Senior IPS officer, M Punna Rao, who underwent a bypass surgery a few days ago, died due to post-operative complications at Krishna Institute of Medical Sciences (KIMS) yesterday.

He was working as Inspector General of Police (IGP) in the Crime Investigation Department (CID).

Known to be simple and the one who always kept a lowprofile, M Punna Rao, who hails from Repalle in Guntur district, joined the Andhra Pradesh police as DSP in 1978.

Initially, he worked in AP Special Police (Battalions) and as SDPO in various districts.

After allotment of IPS in 1988, he worked in the state Intelligence wing, ACB, DCP, North zone in Hyderabad, Joint Commissioner, CAR, Joint Commissioner, Security, Additional Commissioner of Police, Crimes during which he investigated several important cases. During his service, he won two medals and nine rewards for his work.

Punna Rao was suffering from heart-related problems since quite sometime. He was admitted to KIMS a few days ago where he underwent a bypass surgery on April 16.

He passed away around 9.30 a.m. on Tuesday.

Senior police officers including DGP K Aravinda Rao, additional DGPs SV Ramanamurthy (CID), M Mahendar Reddy ( Int e l l igenc e ) , M Ratan (Law and Order) were among those who paid their last respects to Punna Rao.
