Hyderabad, December 31: Noted civil rights activist and senior advocate KG Kannabhiran died on Thursday. His final rituals were performed at Marredpally yesterday night. He is survived by his wife, a son and two daughters.
Panchayatraj minister K Jana Reddy, revolutionary writer Prof. Varavara Rao, balladeer and Telangan Praja Front chief Gadar were among the personalities who paid homage to the civil right activist.
Native of Nellore district, Mr Kannabhiran was well known for his efforts at highlighting the fake police cases on Naxalites and fake encounters and was respected by the democratic forces and feared by the police. His struggle to get justice for the oppressed continued till the end of his life.
He was undergoing treatment for various ailments since a few months.
He played a key role in People’s Union for Civil Liberties and worked as its president in 1994. Over the last four decades, Kannabhiran had relentlessly taken part in the civil rights movement and always voiced his concern whenever there were violations of human rights of common man in the State and in the country. Along with the late K Balagopal, he had played a crucial role in shaping the civil rights movement. He could sustain the civil rights movement against the draconian laws like the POTA and TADA.
TDP president N Chandrababu Naidu and former Kadapa MP YS Jaganmohan Reddy condoled his death.
