In a tragic incident reported from Nelmangala near Dobbspet, three teenage students drowned in a lake in an attempt to take a selfie.
The three students identified as Poornachandra (18), Mohammed Murtuza (17) and Shashank (17) were PUC students from Siddaganga Boys PU College in Tumakuru, TNM reports.
The students’ participants of the National Service Scheme (NSS) team visiting the area in Nijagallu near Dobbspet apart from 51 other students who were accompanied with 7 teachers from their college.
According to reports, the 3 students had gone to the other end of the lake and had climbed onto a moss-covered rock to take a selfie.
Since the rock was moss-covered, Poornachandra slipped and fell into the lake followed by the other two boys who jumped into the lake to rescue him.
But none of the three boys could come out as they got stuck in silt and drowned.
The locals in the area alerted the police and Fire and Rescue Services personnel were called in to fish out the dead bodies. The bodies were later sent for post-mortem to Nelmangala Government hospital.
Earlier in the month of July, two youths drowned under similar circumstances when they attempted to take selfies.
The youths identified as Shamir Rahman, Amit, Srikanth and Bhavani Shankar, all from Bengaluru, were on a trip to Mekedatu waterfalls on river Cauvery when the incident took place.
Rahman slipped and fell into the water and his friend Bhavani Shankar jumped to save Rahman. Since the river water was already soaring high after huge amounts of water was released from the Krishna Raja Sagara (KRS) dam, the youths got drowned in the current.
