Security tightened for polls: DGP

Director General of Police B. Prasada Rao on Tuesday said security was being tightened in the State in view of the ensuing municipal, panchayat and general elections.

Speaking to mediapersons here, the DGP said all possible measures were being made to ensure polling in peaceful atmosphere in the State. He also made it clear that adequate action would be taken on the issue of non-bailable warrants. He also suggested to all the political parties to obtain prior permission from the police for organising rallies, public meetings and so on.

Stating that checking in the Maoist infested areas would be stepped up in view of the general elections, the DGP said his department has arranged special surveillance in the inter-State border areas after receiving Intelligence inputs that extremists might attempt to disturb elections. He also said Police Act was enforced in all the districts and restrictions as per Police Act will be implemented in the urban areas. Security for VIPs will be strengthened, he added.

The DGP said his department has been setting up special check posts along State and national highways. Security has been tightened by deploying helicopters and flying squads. Prasada Rao said steps were being taken to foil smuggling of cash and liquor to be distributed to voters during the elections. Stating that CC cameras were fitted in all the election polling booths, he said they have requisitioned 10 per cent more security personnel for the State to ensure fair and peaceful polling. (NSS)
