Security forces foil bid to storm Secretariat

Hyderabad, July 08: Work at Secretariat, the seat of state administration, remained paralysed. Only 25 percent employees turned up for duty, which was less than attendance on the first day.

Chief minister N Kiran Kumar Reddy took a 11.30 am flight to Tirupati where he will receive President Pratibha Patil. Among the ministers only a couple of them from Seemandhra, including Dharmana Prasada Rao, turned up at their chambers in the Secretariat. But they too didn’t stay for long. The usual stream of visitors was missing.

Some ABVP activists tried to force their way into the Secretariat but were prevented by security forces.

Work in civic depts hit

Day-to-day functioning came to a grinding halt in civic departments like the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC), Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board (HMWS&SB) and the Hyderabad Metropolitan Development Authority (HMDA).

The people who came to these offices to get their grievances addressed had to return home as a majority of the staff stayed away from duties. The GHMC Employees Telangana JAC and the Bhagyanagar Municipal GHMC Employees Union supported the bandh.

TJAC and union leaders forcibly entered the chambers of the officers in all the three departments and forced the officials out.
