Kolkata, January 25: Security has been stepped up across West Bengal on the eve of Republic Day celebrations as the poll-bound state has demanded over 50 companies of central forces by next month to contain growing pre-poll violence.
ADG (Law and Order) Surajit Kar Purakayastha said the administration has written a letter to Chief Election Commissioner S Y Quraishi, urging him to despatch at least 50 to 60 companies of central forces in February prior to the Assembly polls.
“The entire state has been put on a high alert amidst intensified patrolling and a close vigil on all vital installations,” Purakayastha said.
The security agencies, including police, have been asked to intensify vigil in districts bordering with neighbouring countries, he said.
