Security to be beefed up at Tirupati railway station

Tirupati, July 14: Security at Tirupati Railway Station will be tightened, SCR Incharge General Manager Kuldeeep Chaturvedi has said. Talking to newsmen here today, Chaturvedi said that Rs 5 crore had been allocated for beefing up the security. As part of the exercise, luggage scanners, metal detectors and metal door-frames would be installed.

Also, a dog squad and a bomb disposal squad would be in place on round-the-clock vigilance duty at the station where 30,000 to 40,000 pilgrims arrive daily.

Saying that remodelling of the station with an outlay of Rs 10 crore was going on at brisk pace, he said that the entire face of the station would be changed in a year. The facilities including restrooms, toilets, escalators and sanitation would be improved.

Replying to a question, Chaturvedi said additional coaches were being attached whenever the waiting list was long for Chennai and Hyderabad- bound trains. There was a proposal to increase the number of bogies in the EMU train shuttling between Tirupati and Katpadi to 24 to cope up with the rush.

Chaturvedi later inspected the railway station along with Guntakal DRM JSP Singh, Railway security DSP Amrutharaj and Liaison officer Sastry.
