Second phase of Aadhar cards to begin soon

Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) chairman Nandan Nilekani on Tuesday informed that the Authority has enrolled 20 crore people for Aadhar cards across the country.

Talking to media persons at Lakeview Guest House after a delegation of UIDAI met Chief Minister N Kiran Kumar Reddy at his Camp Office, Nandan Nilekani said that the second phase of Aadhar card enrolment drive would start soon in the country. He said that he would continue those registrars, who worked with him for enrolment drive, in the second phase also. He said that AP was still leading in the enrolment drive with its share of 25 percent in the country.

Out of five crore people enrolled in the State, about 4.32 crore Aadhar cards have been already generated and disbursed to the beneficiaries. He said that common man would benefit a lot with the government schemes after the completion of Aadhar cards scheme. He said that the Aadhar cards would benefit the beneficiaries in the implementation of Public Distribution Scheme, Widow Pension, Old Age pension, physically challenged, scholarship, kerosene and LPG subsidy and NREGS.

Responding to fake enrolments, he said he had no knowledge about it. However, he said the the entire data was being observed. Stating that Aadhar is a resident number, he said that it is not a national identity card. He said that the government plans to link the Aadhar card with bank transactions. He said that permanent update centres would soon be started in all the States.
