Hyderabad, December 09: As part of the Civil Defence Week observance, the South Central Railway celebrated Civil Defence Day at its headquarters, Rail Nilayam, in Secunderabad today.
SCR General Manager MS Jayanth, who was the chief guest at the function, lauded the Civil Defence Demonstrations performed by the Civil Defence Volunteers. While tracing the history of Civil Defence, he said Civil Defence was established in the country under the Civil Defence Act 1968, had wings in all Central and State Government departments and consisted of civilian volunteers to serve civilians.
Indian Railways is taking active part in the Civil Defence which is headed by Director General of Civil Defence at the National level, he informed.
He said that the Civil Defence Organisation of SCR had so far trained 5000 railway employees to serve as Civil Defence volunteers to carry out relief and rescue operations at times of natural calamities such as flood, earth quake, accident, internal unrest and also at times of attack by enemy country. Railways being vulnerable to natural calamities and vandalism, the services of Civil Defence volunteers was vital for ensuring uninterrupted railway operations, he added.
About 100 Civil Defence Volunteers staged Civil Defence Demonstrations and exhibited how they were in readiness always to act during untoward incidents.
They rescued several injured persons and casualties by deploying many proven rescue methods such as two parallel rope method, sliding ladder method, sliding jack method, stretcher lashing method, chair knot method, flying fox method, fire fighting and bomb defusing.
Jayanth announced a group cash award of Rs 25,000 to the CD Volunteers in appreciation of their excellant demonstrations performed today.
