Hyderabad, November 06: Reprimanded by her mother for not eating properly and taking care of her health, a degree student tried to end her life by consuming sleeping pills on Thursday. The 18-year-old girl, B Swarnalatha, is a BCom First Year student of Lal Bahadur College at Asif Nagar. She stays with her mother, Saroja, at NBT Nagar in Banjara Hills. Swarnalatha had gone with her mother, Saroja, to attend a family function at Bholakpur on November 3. From there, they went to her aunt’s house at S R Nagar the next day.
“At her aunt’s place, Saroja reprimanded her daughter for not eating properly and not taking proper care of her health,” Asif Nagar police sub-inspector Guruvaiah said. On Thursday morning, Swarnalatha consumed nearly 10 sleeping pills at her aunt’s house. She came to the college and collapsed. The college management immediately rushed her to a corporate hospital where she was given first-aid and later shifted to the Osmania General Hospital. Swarnalatha’s condition is said to be stable. Though there were reports that Swarnalatha was depressed over pressure from her family to discontinue her studies and get married, police denied the same.
“Swarnalatha, in her statement, said that she was depressed over her mother chiding her and there was no other issue,” Guruvaiah said. Saroja works as a maidservant. Swarnalatha’s father, Mallesh, died a few years ago.
