Dehradun, August 25: Forest scientists today called for gathering accurate regional data on climate change to study its impact on the mangroves in Indian sub-continent.
“In the absence of accurate regional data on climate change, it is difficult to conclude its impact on short and long term basis on the mangroves,” noted scientist H S Singh said during a workshop, “Response to forestry sector to climate change,” inaugurated today.
Mangroves in India have strong linkages with the coastal environment and an increase or decrease in the sea level can have devastating effect on them, Singh noted.
The three-day workshop would also discuss issues related to the impact of climate change including Kyoto Protocol.
Several well known scientists including including Jagdish Kishwan, former Director General of Indian Council for Forestry Research and Education (ICFRE) are participating in the workshop.
