School premises seized

Hyderabad, March 18: The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) seized the DAV Public School at Neredmet on Thursday, as it reportedly owed property tax of around Rs 20 lakh.

K Sudhakar, zonal commissioner, GHMC said, “After we issued red notices and warrants to the defaulter, GHMC officials seized the DAV school on Thursday. Some corporate and private schools, colleges and trade units have not paid their taxes in the past few years. We will take stern action.”

On receipt of a red notice, the school management had approached GHMC and sought more time. The management was alleged to have kept postponing the matter.

“Since the school management kept promising and postponing payment of arrears, we decided to take action. We also received a number of phone calls from politicians and prominent personalities after we seized the school advising us to go slow,” he said.

Meanwhile, tension prevailed at the entrance with a clash taking place between GHMC and school staff. It is learnt that school staff allegedly manhandled GHMC officials. Neredmet inspector K Venkat Reddy said two GHMC staff lodged a complaint. Police have registered cases under sections 353 and 504 of IPC. No arrests have been made.
