School kids receive lessons in fire safety

Hyderabad, April 20: Children at the Rosary Convent High School at Gunfoundry, Abids were schooled in fire safety and emergency action plans during fire as part of the Fire Safety Week 2011.

About 600 school children participated in the fire drill and awareness programme and raised many queries and evinced keen interest in self rescue techniques.

The Gowliguda fire station staff conducted a mock evacuation drill followed by fire fighting and rescue demonstrations. A lecture by C Laksmi Prasad, the additional director of Fire Prevention Wing, GHMC also attempted to sensitise students in fire safety techniques.

The Children were taught emergency evacuation from a burning building. They were told that when trapped in thick smoke, they must lie low, tie a wet cloth over their nose and crawl to the nearest exit. The children were also taught emergncy first aid to treat burn injuries.

The managements of schools have been asked to provide the minimum fire safety measures like fire extinguishers, hose reel, overhead tank exclusively for fire fighting, fire alarm, emergency lighting and public address system before May 31 and obtain a No Objection Certificate from the GHMC. Failing this, action will be initiated against the school management. Schools must also conduct fire drills once in a every three months.
