School collapse kills 4 children in Haiti

Haiti, February 16: A mudslide has partially destroyed a school in the northern sector of quake-stricken Haiti, killing at least four children and wounding two others.

The school was located in Cap-Haitien, north of the capital city of Port-au-Prince.

A civil protection official said heavy rains caused the Monday collapse.

“The accident was caused by four days of rain that caused a mudslide,” the official who spoke on condition of anonymity said.

Haiti has already been the scene of last month’s 7.0-magnitude quake that killed over 200,000 people.

The impoverished Caribbean nation has begun to see downpours ahead of the rainy season, which usually starts around May.

Officials warn that the rainy season threatens to worsen the current situation in camps where an estimated 1.2 million people, made homeless by the earthquake, still reside.
