‘Scheming leaders behind fee scheme stir’

Hyderabad, June 30: Chief Minister K Rosaiah has no doubt that a conspiracy was behind the agitation launched by BC leader R Krishnaiah and State BJP chief Kishan Reddy on the fee reimbursement issue.

“Yes. Cent per cent. I have enough information to justify what I have said,” Rosaiah thundered at a meeting with leaders of opposition parties when the latter sought to know on what basis the chief minister saw the role of “some people somewhere” backing the stir.

Red-faced and thumping the desk, the chief minister said he felt that there was no reason in continuing the agitation when the government had already announced its decision to clear the dues by August end. “Already, the government has released Rs 750 crore. We are committed to continuing the scheme notwithstanding the financial burden. How can anyone accuse me of being anti-backward classes?” the chief minister remarked. Later, a delegation of ministers called on fasting BC leader Krishnaiah and persuaded him to call off the fast and assured him that Rs 1,000 crore would be released soon.

Meanwhile, the Cabinet sub-committee constituted to study the fee reimbursement issue is expected to submit its report tomorrow, ahead of the Cabinet meeting on July 1. The government’s intention is to ensure that the benefit is limited to the genuinely deserving students.
