New Delhi, August 30: The Supreme Court today upheld the death sentence awarded to three AIADMK workers for burning to death three hapless college girls at Dharampuri district in 2000 following the conviction for former Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa in a corruption case.
A Bench of Justices G S Singhvi and B S Chauhan rejected the plea of the convicts for a lenient view and said their gruesome offence fell under the category of “rarest of rare offence” warranting death penalty for C Muniappan, Ravindran and Nedunchezhian.
“The ‘rarest of the rare case’ comes when a convict would be a menace and threat to the harmonious and peaceful co-existence of the society. Where an accused does not act on any spur-of-the-moment provocation and he indulges himself in a deliberately planned crime and meticulously executes it, the death sentence may be the most appropriate punishment for such a ghastly crime.
