New Delhi, September 24: The Supreme Court today sought a response from Dr Raneef, a dentist, as to why his bail should not be cancelled for the alleged conspiracy in the barbaric chopping off the hand of Professor T J Joseph by suspected activists of the radical Popular Front of India in Kerala.
A Bench of Justices Markandeya Katju and T S Thakur issued notice to Raneef on the special leave petition filed by the Kerala Government, challenging the bail granted by the High Court, even though he was charged under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention)Act.
Appearing for the State, senior counsel L Nageswara Rao and counsel G Prakash sought cancellation of Raneef’s bail on the ground that he was a conspirator and the High Court had erroneously granted him bail by taking the view that he could only be charged for destruction of evidence.
