New Delhi, January 05: The Supreme Court has issued a notice to Tamil Nadu government on an appeal by an alleged activist of banned fundamentalist outfit “Al Umma” challenging his conviction in a murder case.
Hakkim was one of the four persons sentenced to life imprisonment by a sessions court for killing Sayada, wife of Alim George who the organisation accused of blasphemy by his various actions.
AL Umma was banned by the government in the wake of a series of blasts in Tamil Nadu’s Coimbatore district.
Hakkim has filed the appeal through counsel Mahalakshmi Pavani claiming he was innocent and was not responsible for the murder. The other three convicts however, chose not to appeal so far.
According to the prosecution, on October 26, 1996, Hakkim, along with three others, had barged into the house of Alim George in Coimbatore and attacked him and his family members with lethal weapons.
