SC hears backward communities’ case

New Delhi, October 08: The Supreme Court began hearing on the petitions challenging the HC judgment wherein it had quashed the GO MS No 15 and 16 of the Andhra Pradesh Government moving the Mudiraj, Mutrasi and Tenugollu communities to Group A from Group D of the Backward community.

A Bench, comprising Chief Justice S H Kapadia, Justice K S Radhakrishnan and Justice Swatanteer Kumar asked Solicitor General Gopal Subramanium, appearing for the state government as to why was the Mudiraj community placed in Group D by the Anataram Commission in 1970. The Solicitor General replied that the task before the Anantaraman Commission was to discover the backwardness of the communities. It went to the concept of de-notified tribes, vimukthi jathis.

At this, Chief Justice Kapadia asked whether there was any fishing community in Group D after moving Mudiraj to Group A. The Solicitor replied in the negative.

After formation of Andhra Pradesh, several communities from Telangana were included in this group, Gopal Subramanium said. The Bench was keen to know the reasons for classification and the explanation for mobility.
