SC dismisses petition on EVM

New Delhi, September 07: The Supreme Court today dismissed a petition seeking a direction to the Election Commission for allowing the continuance of ballot papers in place of Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) in elections.

A three-judge Bench comprising Justices J M Panchal, Deepak Verma and B S Chauhan refused to interefere with the decision of the Bombay High Court which had rejected the plea of a politician Banwari Lal.

The apex court said it was not inclined to go into the plea of the petitioner questioning the efiiciency of EVMs and asked him to approach the EC with his grievances.

The Bench also took on record the guidelines laid down by EC for holding elections using EVMs.

EC has said there will be a first-level checking of EVMs and representatives of political parties can be allowed to be present near the machine during polls.
