SC directs satellite imaging of Aravalli hills

New Delhi, February 19: The Supreme Court today directed the conduct of satellite imaging of ecologically fragile Aravalli hill area to assess the magnitude of illegal mining in Rajasthan.

A Special Forest Bench headed by Chief Justice K G Balakrishnan directed the Forest Survey of India (FSI) to carry out Remote Sensing of Aravalli hills spread over 5,000 square kilometre in 15 districts of various states.

The Bench, also comprising Justices S H Kapadia and Aftab Alam, said the Rajasthan government and apex-court appointed Central Empowered Committee would also join the FSI in carrying out the satellite imaging of the Aravalli’s and the report has to be filed within four months.

The exercise has to be carried as there were allegations that the apex court order of the 2005 was being violated and largescale illegal mining carried out on the Aravalli’s falling in Rajasthan.
