SC decline to hear ex-IPS officer Sanjiv Bhatt’s plea seeking security for family

NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court, on Friday (February 8) declined to hear former Indian Police Service officer Sanjiv Bhatt’s plea seeking security for his family.

The top court’s bench of justices A K Sikri and S Abdul Nazeer asked Bhat to approach the Gujarat High Court with the request.

Shweta and her son Shantanu escaped a car accident in Ahmedabad on 7th Januaray with minor injuries. Soon after the accident, Bhatt through his counsel had moved the apex court demanding adequate security for his family members.

Shweta has alleged the accident that took place a day before the scheduled hearing (of Sanjiv Bhatt’s bail plea) in the Gujarat HC was an intimidation tactic by the BJP as Bhatt has been a vocal critic of PM Modi.

On September 5 last year, Bhatt was arrested by the Gujarat police’s crime investigation department (CID) in a case filed by Sumersingh Rajpurohit, a Rajasthan-based lawyer, back in 1996.

Singh had accused Bhatt and other six of framing him on charges of possessing around 1 kg of drugs when he was posted as superintendent of police at Banaskantha district in 1996.

On October 4 last year, the apex court had dismissed a plea filed by Bhatt’s wife challenging the police probe and his judicial custody in connection with a two-decade-old case of alleged planting of banned drugs to arrest an advocate.

The court had asked Bhatt’s wife to approach an “appropriate forum” for relief.
