The Supreme Court has directed the Narendra Modi government to provide details of the religious structures destroyed or damaged during the 2002 Gujarat communal riots in the state.
A bench comprising Justices K S Radhakrishnan and Deepak Misra yesterday issued the direction on a petition filed by the Gujarat government challenging the High Court orders to compensate and rebuild over 500 religious structures destroyed during the riots which rocked the state following Godhra train burning incident in which 59 kar sevaks were killed in February 2002.
The apex court asked the state government, ”You pay compensation when houses and religious places are destroyed or damaged during natural calamaties such as flood and earthquakes. Why cannot you compensate the religious places damaged during communal riots?”
