SBH, RTC in a high decibel decimal row

Warangal, March 03: Blame game is on over the transfer of salaries in lakhs of rupees from the State Bank of Hyderabad to RTC employees in Jangaon, Warangal district.

The gaffe had turned RTC staff into ‘lakhpatis’, though, for a few hours on Tuesday.

Both RTC and SBH authorities are probing the incident to zero in on the persons responsible.

On Tuesday, RTC employees received amounts, 100 times more than their actual salaries, in their SBH accounts through online transfer.

An employee with a salary of Rs.10,000 received as much as Rs10 lakh. The error, it is learnt, has occurred following omission of a decimal in the actual salary figures.

A few RTC employees, finding huge amounts in their accounts, withdrew the maximum possible, Rs.40,000, from ATMs. When the issue came to the notice of SBH officials, they froze all the accounts.

However, by that time, several employees had withdrawn huge amounts.

Speaking to Express, Jangaon RTC depot manager Shyamala blamed SBH officials for the mistake. “After being alerted by me, all accounts were frozen,” she claimed. She felt there would be no problem in recovering the excess amount withdrawn as the accounts were of RTC employees.

But, SBH official spokesperson Murali stated that the error occurred due to the negligence of RTC authorities. He also faulted the SBH officials for failing to identify the mistake and crosschecking with the RTC authorities.

“Every month the local RTC depot manager sends a soft copy of salary bills to the bank manager. Preliminary inquiry revealed that, this month, the person who compiled salary bills omitted a decimal resulting in transfer of heavy amounts of salaries,” he said.
