A photograph published in a major Saudi newspaper showing a candidate in the current municipal elections riding a donkey on his way to vote has angered local authorities, who summoned the photographer for explanation.

The Arabic language daily Okaz, one of the largest newspapers in the Gulf, published the picture on its front page, showing the candidate on his donkey in the southern province of Jazan close to the border with Yemen.

“The Prince’s office has summoned the photographer who took that shot during the municipal elections in Jazan,” Sabq daily said on Monday.

It quoted Yassin Al Qassim, information director at the Prince’s office, as saying that the photographer would be investigated.

“We decided to summon him after we received calls from many local residents expressing resentment at the picture, which they consider as a deliberate attempt to hut their feelings during a national occasion,” he said. “We just hope the picture is not taken with the intention to offend a dear region in our country.”
