‘Saudi Arabia should be given ultimatum’

Tehran, April 21: A senior Iranian official says Iran and Iraq should give an “ultimatum” to Saudi Arabia to end its crackdown against Bahraini people.

“Iran and Iraq should give Saudi [Arabia] an ultimatum to withdraw its forces from Bahrain,” said the Secretary of Iran’s Expediency Council Mohsen Rezaei, Mehr news agency reported on Wednesday.

“Otherwise, both countries can probe the Saudi-bound weapons in the Strait of Hormuz and prevent the dispatch of equipment for suppression of Bahrain’s people to that country (Saudi Arabia),” Rezaei added.

Scores of people have been killed and many more injured during the Manama-sanctioned crackdown since February 14, when the Bahraini public launched a popular revolution against the country’s royal family.

Led by Saudi Arabia, some member states of the [Persian] Gulf Cooperation Council have deployed troops to Bahrain to reinforce brutal armed attacks against anti-government protesters.

The reinforcements have reportedly contributed to a major hike in the use of extreme violence against popular protests in the kingdom.

Senior Iranian officials have repeatedly condemned the violence. The Iranian public has also held rallies on various occasions, protesting at the aggression against Bahrainis.
