Makkah, July 30: Four people were killed and two others injured in a predawn road accident that occurred on the Makkah-Jeddah Expressway.
The dead included a Saudi citizen and three Indians. The two injured were identified as Indians.
S.D. Moorthy of the Indian Consulate General in Jeddah told the accident occurred when a GMC vehicle driven by a Saudi national carrying five Indian laborers turned turtle due to a tire burst.
Moorthy said five of the six accident victims were from Kerala. The dead Indians are Shamijaj, Benny and Sathwan.
The two Indians who are seriously injured are Jaufer, who is currently warded at Zaheer Hospital in Makkah, and Sebastian, who is taking treatment at King Fahd Hospital in Jeddah.
The funeral of the Saudi driver took place in Makkah Friday evening.
According to hospital authorities, Jaufer had sustained fractures in his leg and hands and had to undergo an immediate surgery. Sebastian is suffering from severe burns and had sustained fractures in one of his legs.
The victims were working for the Geological Survey Department in Al-Oula district, some 150 km away from the holy city of Makkah.
At the time of the accident, the workers hired by a private contracting company were returning to Jeddah after work in Al–Oula.
Moorthy said the Indian mission is currently in contact with the next-of-kin of the deceased.
The bodies of the Indian workers are currently lying at the morgues of King Faisal Hospital, Hira Hospital and King Abdulaziz Hospital, all in Makkah.
