Sari poses cancer threat to women

New Delhi, January 30: A new form of cancer, called the sari cancer has emerged, according to According to an article in the November issue of the Journal of the Indian Medical Association, doctors at Grant Medical College in Mumbai.

Three women have been diagnosed with his form of cancer in their waist region, the doctors confirmed to media.

“The sari petticoat (full-length skirt worn inside the sari), if tied in the same place day after day, can cause chronic irritation along the waistline,” says the report. “The constant irritation can result in scaling or pigmentation. But most sari-wearers don’t notice it until it gets chronic,” Dr Bakhshi was quoted by the daily.

As waist dermatose can turn malignant easily, those who wear saris on a regular basis are advised to wear them at different waist levels. Plus, women could women could replace the string with a belt to tie the petticoat.

Sari cancer is a lifestyle-related cancer that is not widely known about in India, even though a majority of Indian women drape the 5.5 metre cloth around themselves on any given day.
