New Delhi: World No. 1 Tennis doubles player Sania Mirza on Friday expressed her happiness at being awarded with the Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna and dedicated the honour to her family and to India.
“I feel very happy, privileged and honoured to receive this award and I would like to dedicate it to the people of India and my family,” Mirza told ANI here.
The World No. 1 also extended her gratitude to the Indian government and the Sports Ministry who nominated her for the award.
Sania Mirza will receive the prestigious Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna award on August 29 despite the Karnataka High Court issuing notice to the government following a petition filed by Paralympian HN Girisha.
Mirza, won her first women’s doubles Grand Slam title by bagging the Wimbledon title with Swiss legend Martina Hingis in June.
President Pranab Mukherjee will present the Khel Ratna and other sports awards on Saturday at the Rastrapati Bhavan as India celebrates August 29 as National Sports Day to mark the birthday of hockey legend Dhyan Chand. (ANI)
