Sania Mirza achieves career-best fifth WTA doubles rank

Indian tennis ace Sania Mirza has entered the top-five for the first time in her career as the new WTA doubles chart was released on Monday.

Sania, who turned a professional tennis player in 2003 and overcame a career-threatening wrist injury in between, has achieved her career-best rank of number five in the world.

Sania and her partner Cara Black from Zimbabwe could not go deep in the recently concluded Wimbledon championships, but a second round appearance provided the Indian tennis ace with her crucial 130 ranking points that were enough to push her in the top five.

Sania said that it has been a long hard journey since her comeback to tennis from her third surgery when her career seemed to be over, adding that it is a very satisfying feeling to have bounced back from those despairing times and to be ranked in the top-5 of the world.

Her father and coach Imran Mirza said that he has always believed that his daughter had the potential to be a top-5 player, adding that he is happy Sania has overcome heavy odds to justify her promise. (ANI)
