London: Sania Mirza took the sole top spot in the women’s doubles rankings after beating former partner Martina Hingis in the Cincinnati Open tennis tournament.
Sania and Barbora Strycova defeated Martina Hingis and Coco Vandeweghe 7-5, 6-4 in Cincinnati on Sunday.
The win enabled Sania to take sole possession of the rankings with 11,260 points, followed by Hingis, who has 10,945, according to the latest list issued by Women’s Tennis Association (WTA) on Monday.
Sania and Martina formed a successful doubles partnership, winning 14 titles, including three Grand Slams.
That catapulted them to joint numbers ones in the rakings. But they surprisingly announced last month their decision of ending the association.
In the men’s doubles Rohan Bopanna dropped two places to 17th, veteran Leander Paes slid 10 spots to 72nd and Divij Sharan going up a place to 68th.
In the men’s singles, Swiss star Stanislas Wawrinka advanced to third spot with 4,980 points in the Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP) rankings.
Serbian player Novak Djokovic continues to lead the chart with 14,840 points while Swiss superstar Roger Federer fell to the fourth place.
American Serena Williams continues to lead the womne’s singles rankinsg with 7,050 points, way ahead of second placed German Angelique Kerber (6860).
