Sangma to float new political party

Former Lok Sabha Speaker Purno Agitok Sangma is set to raise a new party next month after his unsuccessful bid to Rashtrapati Bhavan, sources closes to Sangma said today.

The formation of the new party – the Nationalist Indigenous Peoples’ Party of India – will be decided to tomorrow at the meeting consultative meet of top Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) leaders from across the Northeastern states in Shillong.

The party is expected to bank on the support of several million indigenous in the country like Mayawati. The Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) is based purely on caste politics. Mr Sangma, who would also attend the meeting, will address NCP legislators, District Council members and party workers on the next course of his action.

However, sources closes to Mr Sangma said the formation of the Nationalist Indigenous Peoples’ Party of India is in the offing with majority of the NCP workers are unhappy with Sharad Pawar’s stand against Mr Sangma during the just concluded presidential election.

Mr Sangma was forced to quit the NCP and as member of the Meghalaya legislative assembly after Mr Pawar refused to back his presidential candidature. UNI
