Lucknow: Former Uttar Pradesh chief minister Akhilesh Yadav on Monday announced that the Samajwadi Party would fight on only five seats in the upcoming Gujarat polls and support the Congress on the rest.
The Samajwadi Party and the Congress had joined hands in the last Uttar Pradesh assembly elections, to counter the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in the state.
“The Samajwadi Party will fight on five seats. We will support the Congress on the rest,” Akhilesh said.
Eyeing Patidar votes, the Congress is also trying to get support from their leaders to counter the BJP in Gujarat, where they had been in power since 1995.
Meanwhile, Congress vice president Rahul Gandhi is on a visit to Gujarat’s Ahmedabad today and is likely to meet Hardik Patel.
On the other hand, BJP president Amit Shah is on a visit to Gujarat’s capital, Gandhinagar, for a state board meeting of the party.
The date of Gujarat polls has not been decided as yet. (ANI)
