Salvage team lands on listing ship

Three days after the Indian Navy and Coast Guard rescued 20 persons onboard MV Jindal Kamakshi, a merchant ship which had begun to list off Vasai coast in neighbouring Palghar district, the salvaging efforts are underway.

There has been no oil spill from the ship, the Coast Guard said in a release here, and added that salvage team had been put onboard.

The statement said that anchor of the ship had been dragging. The ship, initially 35 km from the coast, was now about 20 km away.

“As the extremely bad weather off Mumbai coast has restricted the movement of shipping/ boats, the Tug Ocean Thunder also could not reach the stranded vessel for assessing/planning the salvage operation,” the release said.

The Caost Guard then deployed its helicopter from Mumbai to put the salvage team onboard to prevent the ship for running aground and causing pollution by oil spill.

A Chetak helicopter flew the salvage team from Colaba here and winched them down on the ship.
